simple shui | field notes

everything is energy; everything is changing; and everything is connected.

these observations are the groundwork for a shui lifestyle.

but what does it all mean when we’re talking about you + your house? and how would using shui change you + your life?

well. . .

1. substance creates style. once you digest that everything is energy, you become your house’s warrior, preferring only what is most definitive and sacred to you + your tribe.

2. life is constant change, and our homes are no different. so, we edit. edit again. and edit some more. simple shui positively persuades you to pluck out what isn’t functional, inspiring, and/or worthy of you + your house.

3. our home influences our life. right now. and life influences our home. present moment. so, make LOVE the filter — because everything is connected — and the results are absolutely conversation worthy.

simple shui changes the way you see everything. embrace a few basics, and you pursue those things + experiences that hold a multitude of meanings.

it takes a moment to relax into how it all works, and getting on the right track is much easier with someone else’s field notes.

so, here is a slivered glimpse into how a seemingly innocuous room can influence the gorgeous canvas of our lives.

EACH SPACE HAS PURPOSE.

you know the entryway is one of the most potent + ripe areas of a house because it is where we usher in the dream job, more money, happier vibes, true love. . . whatever we desire waltzes through the front door. {all other doors welcome opportunities we are already expecting.} which is why i have a penchant for the front door and what happens just beyond its threshold. have a quick look at yours — does it embody + speak to your intentions?

START WHERE YOU ARE.

our entry has enormous ceilings – and when we first moved into the bare space, it was overwhelming + intimidating. instead of simply decorating the room, shui was my language for good design. i contemplated what was soothing when we felt overwhelmed and intimidated – comfort + safety, happy faces, and some notion of what-to-do-next were our cravings and those answers became the creative fertilizer.

SHUI INSPIRES THE DESIGN PROCESS.

shui transforms our home into a playground. its map + 5 elements {each with yin + yang versions} + energy cures shepherd our decisions so we can physically manifest our inner goals. it inspires unexpected ingenuity and nothing is left a casualty to indecision!

BLEND IT ALL TOGETHER.

and this is how it all works harmoniously. . .

our entry lies in the self-journey/career section of the shui map – water is the element most at home here. water represents wealth and abundance. it is the element that, when expressed, puts us in the flow of synchronicity. it can be anchored in a space with actual water or water imagery. {side note: whatever the image depicts is the experience you are likely to attract so no reckless waves, okay?} glass, crystal, mirrors, dark colors, and asymmetrical shapes all suggest water, too.

we depicted water in the space through a symphony of photos with moving waves, dark hued furniture, fresh flowers, canvased art with a glossy {watery} finish, and glass lamps.

to alleviate the intimidation vibe and inform comfort, we used larger-than-life frames and art to establish an eye line so the room felt smaller. each frame is home to gorgeous beach photos and our lovelies soaking up its dazzle – sand + surf being a favorite destination of ours. the heavy furniture provides grounding, reassuring energy. and to give us that literal + figurative sense of direction, three lamps {with various lighting settings} line the hall along with wool rugs underfoot to pad our way.

so, while each choice provides texture + visual delight to our gracious entry, it all welcomes and harnesses prosperous energy. a recipe for good design, yes? it’s this understanding that inspires us to choose meaningful things because of their duality – what we LOVE and its shui potency. and while it takes time to integrate it fully, the simmering composition is always complete with both substance and style. and that is a gushing good feeling!
