Keep the Change

I have spent the better part of my morning looking through pictures from last fall. My girls graduate from Kindergarten today, and boy, what a year it has been! When they started, one of our daughters fell in love immediately. She couldn't get enough of school — the interaction, her teacher, new friends, the works! As for her sister, well, she was o-vah school the first day. Change is not always easy.

Here's what I know: When we resist change, we actually lose our power. And isn't power why we fight it in the first place? It can be overwhelming to let go of the familiar. I'll admit — I am not always a fan of something different or new. I am a full-blown control freak. But over the year, I have had opportunities where going with the flow was really my only option. And every time I relaxed into the moment, which is the secret to releasing fear, I made considerable and impressive progress. On my better days, when an unexpected or unwanted change hits, I try to ask "What for?" instead of "Why?' By framing it this way, I am more open to developing the qualities necessary to handle change.

My world is about to change as school lets out — our summer, so far, is wide open. Translation: Structure free. This should prove interesting as we are all comfortably accustomed to our daily routines. I am hoping that as we surrender to summer, hopefully with the right dispositions and a little imagination, it will be the best one yet!
