2 ways to *lighten up*!
when i go into a home and every available space is covered with stuff AND the client is trying to bring some relief into their world (via an experience, feeling, even a love match), i HEAR what they want. i also SEE what their space is saying back to them. when every ounce of geography is consumed with stuff, the conversation happening around them is actually “i can’t handle more.”
consider this: would you buy / replace an appliance in your home without asking if the company can haul away the old one? nope. you need the room, right? same thing in your life. so, do your best to GIVE YOURSELF a little ROOM in every room. that way, your house keeps the “i am available to new possibilities” light on for you 24/7! and if you need the nudge, here are two good places to start:
if you enter a room and your eye (attention) is drawn everywhere, you might initially be intrigued. stay awhile, though, and your curiosity can morph into low-level overwhelm. too much “stuff” in one space causes brain fatigue. how? the effort required to “process” all the information is exhausting. avoid this by defining each room’s purpose. and once that decision is made, let its superstar shine. for instance, in your bedroom, the bed is its main attraction. if the dresser or bedside tables are cluttered, clear them off. if this space is where the day’s loose ends land (laundry baskets, work), move them out. your design task is to tell the eye where to look. when you do, it will deliver all the AAAAAHs and optimize those actualization efforts!
closets (especially ones dedicated to wardrobe) relate to authenticity, identity and personality. “cleaning the closet” is a mighty vocal invitation, so keep this in mind anytime you’re ready to provoke a new version of yourself. get rid of clothing that doesn’t make you feel better than you look. let go of anything that doesn’t represent who you are becoming. and leave a little open space to signal that new things (attitudes, opportunities, people) are welcome in your life. xo
