bang bang

Last week, in a most unnecessary rush, I backed out of my garage.

Before the door had completely gone up.

{still makes me cringe}

You know the feeling? That flesh-eating realization if you had only waited a few more moments, the outcome would not have been so…ummm…halting?!

After I took the walk of shame inside to tell Mr. Brightside, and we he surveyed the damage, I climbed back into the car. With all the air out of me, the lovelies started chirping away.

"What happened, mom?"

Ugh.

"I wasn't paying attention and backed the car into the garage door."

"Is your car okay?"

"Yes."

"Is the garage door broken?"

"No. But it is definitely bent. I should've been paying closer attention. I can't believe I just did that…"

"It's alright, mom."

Silence.

"You know why?"

"Why?"

"Because when you make a mistake, you never forget it. So you don't have to worry about making that mistake again."

For a brief moment, anguish subsided. Even though my oversight was certainly stinging, hearing my lovelies offer advice that had been given to them mere months ago captured me whole.

I never know what they actually hear me say. Or what soaks into their emotional beings. But for them to understand now that making mistakes has purpose is HUGE. And while my door may have more curve than before, it was almost worth it for the unexpected glimpse into who my little lovelies are becoming.
