simple shui | 10 things i know for sure about clutter
early in my feng shui studies, i heard a story that made me buzz. it went something like this…
forever ago, there was a gang of BIG thinkers who noticed luck was something not everybody enjoyed.
they plunged into deep inquiry, carefully noticing how nature influences well-being.
these philosophers discovered the environment plays to predictable patterns and since everything is connected, it is possible to improve one’s luck. if a seed lands in fertile soil and that patch of land has the luck of sunshine, water, and protection, it thrives. likewise, if we plant ourselves in the best possible surroundings, we align ourselves with wealth, health, and happiness.
this will probably not come as a surprise, but clutter does not support favorable conditions. we might execute feng shui cures flawlessly but if clutter is looming, there is a good chance our results will be diluted.
after years of observation and hearing clients’ stories, here is what i know for sure about clutter:
- when there is little room for physical growth, there’s not enough room for personal growth. feng shui is environmental metaphor, and the accuracy for this one is bullseye!
- prosperity (money + opportunities + good luck) comes with moving energy. ‘feng’ means wind or energy; ‘shui’ translated is water or fortune. combined, it means feng shui is the alignment of energy and fortune. wind and water need room to flow, right? take this in to your space, and it suggests we needs pockets of open space for the ‘energy of fortune’ to literally and figuratively move around.
- the closer we are to something, the bigger its influence. so even if we set intentions and shui like a BOSS, our work will be compromised by the clutter we tolerate.
- open space not only creates room for changes to take place, it also suggests we are inviting something new into our lives. BONUS: it also gives the eyes a place to rest, which is like a mental hot shower.
- everything is energy. if you do not appreciate something, it holds that energy in place. so despite the excuses we come up with, we’re the ones compromising our happiness by holding onto things we do not LOVE/use/need.
- clearing clutter is a logical and foolproof step to accomplishing our goals because ultimately it takes more energy to ignore, procrastinate, and avoid dealing with clutter.
- we tell ourselves we might need/want our stuff later, but in fact, we are really saying “i don’t have enough time to deal with this right now.” to become more efficient and productive, eliminate THOSE conversations as much as possible and then hold onto the handle bars, babe!
- what remains after you purge a space needs to be given a “home” immediately. just like you know where your bed is and your kids are, your things need their own space. once you’ve given something a space, return it to its “home” whenever you use it. belongings BELONG somewhere.
- you don’t need to wait until a new year, a full moon, Mercury in retrograde, or spring cleaning season to get started. small efforts every day are usually better than an overhaul that leaves you overwhelmed and resigned.
- clutter will fight to be right, but it comes down to this: there is a difference between an emotional bond to something and emotional bondage because of something. get rid of anything not worth missing, and your life will yield a wellspring of freedom! xo
