simple shui | a client story

i first worked with client #makingacomeback in 2014. her mission: clear out her clutter. it was taking over her life, but the sheer overwhelm kept her stuck. so, during our first consult, i coached her through clearing clutter out of one room. when we were done, she felt motivated to take this “template” to the other cluttered spots of her home.

she reached out again a few weeks ago for another consult. when we began our conversation, she told me two things:

within an hour of our very first consult, one of her listings sold. and that listing – $1 million!

and.

despite that immediate success, she didn’t follow through with the other rooms. and since our first consult, she noticed clutter had taken a heavier toll. she was feeling depressed, uncomfortable, and unhappy. this time, though, there was an urgency in her voice.

i want to interrupt quickly and say THIS is exactly why clutter is insidious. we get so comfortable and familiar with it, we don’t notice the energetic cost until we feel past lousy.

(back to her story…)

she and i met for our consult, and this time, we took a different approach. i recommended 2 strategies that were manageable. each would allow her to make progress every day without the overwhelm.

she wasn’t completely convinced as we ended our call, so i offered one last thought. “you’ve been doing it your way for 6 years, so we know where that gets you. aren’t you a little curious what life will feel like without all the stuff? will you give this a try long enough to get one step past your normal excuses and find out?”

she admitted being curious. with that, she was all in. and what began as overwhelm quickly became a miracle in motion!

but don’t listen to me. here are excerpts from our convo that began 3 weeks ago:

DAY 1:

“i am just trying to not get overwhelmed. i feel the most i can actually get OUT of the house, the better.”

(later that day): “you know, i feel like anything that gets out of the house is a huge win. it’s just hilarious to see what is lurking around the corner.”

DAY 2:

“it’s interesting. i am facing all the ways i wanted to be or thought would be great ideas. i feel like it was me never feeling good enough. supplements, weight loss, self-help books. searching searching searching. but here i am today in 2019, and the question is ‘what and who do i want to be today?’”

DAY 3:

“today is quiet. no TV. no podcasts. just me and my many things in search of myself. it’s kind of random how i am clearing, but it’s working!”

(later that day): “deep breath. one thing at a time.”

DAY 4:

“i feel for the first time like this is possible!”

DAY 5:

“taking a 30 minute time out, then i am back at it for the afternoon. my brain does not like the messiness, so i keep going back to the places that have been de-cluttered and are clear!”

(later that day): “in the mail today and out of the blue – a $500 CHECK!!!”

DAY 6:

“the toughest part is keeping myself going, so it helps to message you. it gives me a place to send my progress!”

(later that day): i’m still working. i realize this will take a bit of time, but my house in now talking to me and it says it is SO happy! i so so so appreciate you – i’m doing the physical emotional work, but you are holding the space and cheering me on!”

DAY 7:

“i can’t get over how everything is now speaking to me – i am led by something other than myself. still have a way to go but i am working from a much different place! it doesn’t seem as depressing and hard. i’ve lost 5 pounds, too!”

(later that day): “i found this dream catcher in a closet – it’s up now and it is sensational!”

DAY 8:

“the coincidences keep coming. and i had an amazing experience at Whole Foods. the depression is definitely lifting, which is actually the biggest gift you can have given me. tears of joy and deep bow.”

(later that day): “i’m still at it, and wow! i’m tired!! but when i go out and about to do my errands, i’m a different person! it’s amazing! i’m seeing the world through different eyes. my brain got me started. and YOU! it is so much more fun now, and i have thinking space in my brain!!!”

this story is still developing. compared to where she began, her world today is magic and miracles. and it happened when she pushed past her tired excuses. refused to negotiate with her clutter. trusted the process. and hired the help to get her there.

there are so many good reasons to clear clutter, and we can have a convo about allll of them one day over coffee. however, at the top of that list, there is only one: YOU. so, next time you’re looking at the closet (you know the one!), stop your excuse-driven chatter and just get busy. because YOU deserve all the magic and miracles waiting on the other side of it! you deserve the transformation of becoming your most awake, and fully empowered self!
