how I ‘read’ a home in the first 30 seconds…

earlier this week, someone asked me: when you walk into someone’s home, what are the first things you instinctively notice?

I don’t start by looking at the floor plan. I first pay attention to my senses.

what do my eyes do first? do they settle…or dart around the room?

does the house feel bright or dim? quiet or noisy?

can I instinctively tell where I’m ‘supposed’ to go? is there somewhere to put my bag without thinking about it?

I think of this as letting the home introduce itself to me.

we spend plenty of time talking about the personalities of people, but I happen to think homes have personalities, too. and one of the ways that essence shows up is through the Five Elements.

we often think about Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water as colors, materials, or things to have in a room according to shui.

I experience them differently. to me, they’re feelings.

Wood feels like POSSIBILITY. the windows are open. there’s a notebook waiting to be filled. morning walks are ritual here. fresh flowers, always. the sense that something new is beginning. rearranging the furniture just to see what happens. making plans. believing there’s always another way.

Fire feels like CONNECTION. it’s the candles lit before sunset. music drifting through the house. maybe there’s a little dancing, a bottle of red wine open, and laughter. a table that’s too small for everyone but somehow works anyway. compliments given freely. and always one more story before everyone finally heads home.

Earth feels like BELONGING. soup simmering on the stove. fresh bread cooling on the counter. bare feet. hugs that last a little longer. someone asking if you’ve eaten yet. a basket of blankets within reach.

Metal feels like REFINEMENT. crisp, clean sheets. deep breaths. sunlight coming through polished windows. clear countertops. white space on your calendar. knowing exactly where everything belongs. the relief of finally making a decision.

Water feels like REFLECTION. a hot bath at the end of the day. tea steeping. a favorite chair and a good book. a conversation that somehow lasts three hours without anyone noticing. moonlight through an open curtain. dimmed lights. silence that feels comforting instead of lonely.

every home has its own LOVE LANGUAGE, and the beautiful part is you already know it. think about the room you linger in or that one chair everyone gravitates toward. what window always gets opened? if you start paying attention, your home will literally tell you your story. xo
