how to work with Yin and Yang…

yin and yang are universal energies that attract and create movement. however, in some conversations, these concepts get labeled “good” and “bad.” this assumes one state is better than the other. for instance, yin is often confused for “passive” while yang is perceived as high energy. truth? a balance of both is required to keep energy – and the world – moving fluidly. look at the world today, and the extremism happening would be considered an overdose of yang energy.

when working with my clients, i encourage them to think of yin as the SOUL and yang as the PRACTICE. i find these labels open us to their equally benevolent influence in our lives. but let’s dig in even more, and take a quick peek into how the concept of yin / yang can really deliver change during a client consult:

let’s say my client has a hard time expressing themselves…

or they’re not fond of being home (during a pre-COVID quarantine)…

or there is a tendency of throwing things away (a lot)…

this tells me they (or their surroundings) embody more yang than yin qualities. so, my suggestion would be to invite balance with a dose of yin features, like curved furniture or flowing shapes; deeper / darker colors to pull the hyperactive energy inward; or photos hung slightly below eye-level.

and when i’m working with an overly yin client – who might struggle with control issues, hold onto things way too long, or resists leaving the house much – i would recommend adjustments like adding smooth or glossy features in a few rooms to speed up energy; favoring natural light as much as possible throughout the home; or hanging photos slightly above eye level.

cool, right? i LOVE my shui toolbox SO much!

when we keep this balance in mind – whether through our physical spaces, lifestyle choices, or BOTH – we find ourselves in the ultimate comfort zone. xo
