simple shui x doTERRA | ways to clear lingering energy
a steady conversation i find myself in with clients hovers around Qs like. . .
how do i clear the energy after divorce?
how do i remove the resentment?
what if we are separated but still living together?
what are your thoughts about the furniture we shared?
while answers always vary depending on the nuances of each circumstance, space clearing rituals are a first responder because they safeguard the notion of “home” and harness cosmic support.
a couple weeks ago, i collaborated with Kirsty so the inclination was immediate to ask how she utilizes essential oils to space clear during a divorce +/or the process of letting go. here’s our convo and what i learned. . .
S/S: sage brings positive energy back to life. it clears emotional residue we can’t shake, no matter how hard we try. so, my first suggestion to a client is light a small sage bundle and as its smoke works the room, hold the highest intention of LIGHT and LOVE for everyone in the house, regardless of any shared history. this ritual isn’t to force forgiveness or resolution; it’s simply clearing space for something better to arrive in our life. what oil(s) facilitate moving with/through grief?
KIRSTY: every oil has a physical + emotional benefit, facilitating responses in the mind and body. they work so well because they directly interact with the limbic system and amygdala which are all about emotions, memories, instincts and mood. here is a Moving Forward Blend that i have put together for you! simply diffuse or use as a roller blend, and apply to your heart chakra and wrists throughout the day.
Bergamot (10 drops), Frankincense (8 drops), Cypress (5 drops), and Vetiver (5 drops), and diffuse or top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil into a 10ml Roller Bottle.
Bergamot is about self-acceptance – uplifting, reassuring and restoring. it is also used to reduce stress levels as it enhances our mood + builds confidence.
Frankincense is a power oil i would ever not include! it helps calm you down + ease anxious thoughts. it has been used throughout the ages as a purification oil that negates unwanted energy + encourages protection.
Cypress helps us feel grounded, secure and open to change – and it purifies surrounding energies. it has an energising scent which helps us when our own energy levels are low.
Vetiver is known as the oil of tranquility – reassuring, regenerating and enduring. it has a lovely earthy scent, which is hugely grounding, and it promotes better sleep.
S/S: oooh – i LOVE that recipe – and i am also obsessed with frank!
another Q that comes up often here is what to do about the great divide of furniture. i suggest being selective about what a client keeps. if we look at a piece of furniture or decor and our first thought wraps us into a negative script, that wonky energy gradually wears us down. but let’s be real, too – setting up a new space/house is an expensive + exhaustive endeavor, and starting over from scratch isn’t necessary or realistic. so, choose those things with the least amount of emotional density first. if you are still sleeping on the mattress once shared, buy a new one soon. until you replace it, sage the bed and buy new sheets. soft hues of pinks or greens are good for heartbreak; however, any new bedding in a color you LOVE will be more powerful than you expect. what are your recommendations for lingering energies we need to harmonize or eliminate?
KIRSTY: using oils for protection and clearing away old energies goes back centuries! some of my favourites for protection…
Basil has been used historically as protection against evil spirits + clearing negative energy. it also opens the heart chakra, which is important when healing from heartbreak.
Sandalwood has a calming, sweet, woody scent – and has also been used through the ages for protection and purification.
Cedarwood offers spiritual strength + purges negative energy – and it is incredibly grounding!
Juniper protects us from negative energy and people in our environment.
Lemon is uplifting, invigorating and refreshing – it is cleansing and shifts stale energies out for fresh ones.
Lavender has a long history of being used in smudging rituals, so think of Lavender for those sticky energy spots, especially ones that just won’t lighten up. and in some cultures, it is believed to bring spiritual blessings.
S/S: this list includes some of my favorite oils in the box! i LOVE bundling sage with lavender for smudging – Ms. L is a gentle + benevolent guide when reframing energy and setting up a ‘new’ home.
alright, let’s talk resentment – which has a heavy footprint and can leave us under its influence. some simple shui abracadabra i employ to release it: move things around. this is a mighty metaphor for changing + improving our perspective. resist the urge to over-complicate this task. push the bed a couple inches to the left or right, switch some lamps around, bump books to a new shelf, or refresh a closet. small adjustments (paired with intention) equal BIG strides forward.
if you’re keeping the house post-divorce, consider changes that suggest a fresh start – paint the walls, play with new textures and comforts, or recalibrate with colors you LOVE. these little shifts will liberate joy in your home. and, until you feel settled, ring your doorbell once a day to initiate the space as all your own. what oils support the emotional maintenance of letting go and looking forward to life again?
KIRSTY: i think we can all relate to those moments in life where you have to say goodbye – whether it’s letting go of old friendships, relationships, losing a loved one or even simply closing chapters of our lives. Rosemary springs to mind first as it’s known as the oil of remembrance, transition and higher knowledge, and it supports our adjustment to new experiences + understanding there is a bigger, BETTER picture for us.
as for fresh starts, cleansing scents put bounce back in our step and are literally like having sunshine in our pocket, so find your favourite citrus oil and get diffusing.
flower oils are all about opening up to possibility and encouraging time out and self-love. i often carry a Rose or Jasmine roller touch with me as it’s a lovely alternative to chemical perfumes (which offer none of the emotional and physical benefits of essential oils).
finally, conifer oils are grounding, uplifting, stimulating and invigorating. they insist you take deep, energising breaths and fill your lungs up. i combine all these properties in my Fresh Start Blend and diffuse in the mornings:
Lemon (10 drops), Rosemary (10 drops), Siberian Fir (8 drops), and Eucalyptus (8 drops).
Lemon is great for removing negative energy, easing worries and releasing doubts. being a citrus oil, it is a mood modulator so it shifts you right into that happy place.
Rosemary is about transition + purification. in ancient times, it was a favourite for driving away evil spirits, so it really clears the air and moves us forward.
Siberian Fir is great for brain fog or exhaustion. it is affirming + revitalising with its fresh woody scent, which balances our emotions and soothes anxious feelings.
Eucalyptus is said to be the oil of relationships … both with others and our self. it also erases lingering energy from arguments. it’s refreshing, clearing and helps with letting go and releasing what no longer serves us.
S/S: i LOVE all these blends – thank you SO much, Kirsty! you and i both agree space clearing is a bewitching way to create sacred space and raise our spirits. i often say it’s not necessary to understand how it works for us to use it, so whatever ritual or combination of rituals resonates with you, trust the LOVE. because however we filter out sticky energy and heavy vibes, it unapologetically clears room for our restoration and happiness! xo
