the bagua isn’t the boss
you are probably familiar with the bagua: accumulate more money? go to your WEALTH area. improve a relationship? mosey over to your LOVE area. get all eyes on you? strut into your FAME area. looking for a new job? march into CAREER.
as much as I LOVE the bagua, I am going to tell you what I tell my students: the bagua is one tool in our bags, but it is not the multi-purpose tool we think it is when we’re new to shui.
hear me out.
if you tell me you’re looking for LOVE, we’re going to take a look-see at your bedroom before we audit the LOVE area.
if you’re feeling exposed, maybe even needing more protection from the turbulence out there (aren’t we all?!), we’re starting at your front door.
if sparking interest from the outside world hits high on your list – you know, opportunities, invitations, people and possibilities – we are going to talk about your windows.
if you are trying to bring something to life, I might suggest ways to collaborate with plant medicine, like plants, herbs, essential oils, natural fibers.
if you’re looking to hold onto something, that’s a job for the element EARTH.
and if you’re craving a spark of magic, I’m going to have you meet me in the kitchen.
not a single suggestion here requires you to know where your WEALTH or LOVE or CAREER sections are – and it is the one thing I really, really, really wish people understood about shui.
the bagua provides incredibly useful insights, and it helps us make immediate correlations between our surroundings and our lives that we were maybe missing. it also gives us a whole new perspective for reading a room, our home, and ultimately, our lives.
and, still…
common sense sits at the head of the table.
and while we’re letting common sense hold one end of the table, YOU, my dear reader, are sitting at the other end of that table. you and allyour instincts, your preferences, your actual life, what makes you feel safe, and what you LOVE (even though some shui rule in Google school told you not to).
your house gives us information; the bagua gives us information; and most importantly, YOU are giving us information. and if you really want to work with shui in a way that makes a difference, you learn to listen to all three.
because when you do…whether money feels tight, work is all-consuming, nobody is sleeping, you’re ready for love, or it is time for something BIG (you can just feel it)… you can masterfully schlep your house’s help into the conversation.
