the question that changed how I think about homes
early in my Feng Shui studies, I was learning enough to become dangerous.
suddenly, I had this awareness to see everything that was ‘wrong’ with our home. naturally, every challenge seemed glaringly obvious, and every recommendation I learned pointed me toward another thing that needed fixing.
I remember sitting in my first certification course and asking my teacher a question that had been weighing on me: “when it’s time to move… can I honestly sell our home in good conscience, knowing everything I know now?”
(bless my heart.)
she looked at me for a moment and deadpanned, “yes.”
I thought she misunderstood the question, so I immediately explained all the reasons I felt conflicted, but she stopped me.
she said, “we are drawn to the structures and spaces that are aligned with the lessons and messages we need. when you’re ready to move, you will have learned everything your house can teach you.”
and let me tell you – I’ve not only thought about those words hundreds of times over the years, but I have shared them just as much.
her reply completely changed the way I practice Feng Shui. while I absolutely believe our homes influence our lives, I know now – after that mic drop and many consultations later – that they’re not responsible for everything.
there is actually a name for this perspective. in House Therapy, we refer to it as the Trio of Luck.

so, a little lesson in Chinese metaphysics…
our lives are shaped by three influences:
Heaven Luck is the timing of our lives. whenever you hear me say ‘the season you’re in’, this is what I am referring to … it’s destiny, the cycle of our life, and all the things we don’t control.
Earth Luck is our environment. it’s our home, our neighborhood, our office space, and all those third places we spend our days. this is where Feng Shui is nestled – and where we have tremendous opportunity to participate.
and then there’s Human Luck. this holds our choices, our thoughts, and our willingness to show up, respond, grow, and participate in our own lives.
I adore this framework because it reminds us that while our homes matter…
… they don’t carry the entire weight of our lives.
translation:
you don’t have to fear that one missing corner, a ‘really awkward’ floor plan, or one cluttered hotspot has sealed your fate.
your reframe: you get to partner with your home, strengthen what you can, and become intentional about the spaces you inhabit – all while remembering that you have far more influence than fear-based Feng Shui would have you believe.
and on that note, I’d LOVE to know…
has your home ever surprised you by becoming exactly the teacher you needed? xo
