simple shui | what is feng shui?

during a recent purchase, a sales associate inquired about my profession.

“i am a feng shui consultant.”

(long pause)

“ummm. i don’t know what that is, i guess,” she said.

“it’s kind of like move your stuff, change your life,” i offered.

“oh! i think i know what you’re talking about. i didn’t realize that could be a job…” she continued.

“it is, and i am,” i laughed.

we continued discussing it further, and before i left, she asked for my information.

i’ve heard countless definitions over the years, and a few of my favorites include:

feng shui is environmental metaphor — our identity + beliefs are objectified around us.

feng shui is a different language for good design.

feng shui is acupuncture for architecture.

feng shui is a design system focused on achieving inner and outer balance and harmony.

i LOVE and pivot to these descriptions often, yet for me personally, shui is the sweet spot where home-improvement and self-improvement kiss and make-out. it’s an exploration into what is really getting in our way; and the work we do fosters and fuels personal growth, change, and evolution – one room at a time. because when our home feels better, so do we. period. feng shui is more than pretty living + clearing your clutter, and it’s not about perfection – which is really a tidy form of procrastination. it’s moving through the imperfections + challenges of life WHILE strengthening our voice; clarifying our mission; and empowering ourselves.

the work is spiritual; it’s holy; and it’s why your space matters. because when we empower our surroundings, we simultaneously empower ourselves, and that is its own kind wonderful.
