simple shui | before and after

making a home is personal.

so when we move into a “new” space and try to adopt what the previous owners chose, it sometimes feels like trying to be someone else.

which we all know, of course, never works out. eventually, that catches up with how you feel. about everything else.

a client of mine purchased a home in a neighborhood she loved. there were so many features she fell in love with, she didn’t feel compelled to address the few that bothered her. they seemed easy enough to live with at first glance.

by the time we met up almost a year after she moved in, she felt weighed down and discouraged.

the home was painted predominantly in hues of orange and tan. and for some folk, those colors are a cosmopolitan of grounding and stimulating energies. for others, however, they can feel smothering.

when i inquired how my client felt about her home, she used one word: STUCK.

when we don’t love what we see, it can stall us within an inch of our lives. my client was ignoring her creative impulses because the color scheme did not resonate. the idea of infusing the space with money suffocated her because it would make the colors even more permanent. and she was hesitant if her husband would even be open to a discussion about change since he liked the colors.

what she didn’t realize was the indifference she was hoping to cultivate was actually stealing her life’s energy. which is why she felt STUCK.

oftentimes during a consult, one or two problems will percolate to the top. they become an overarching problem huddling all the others. if you are willing to trust those leads and take the first step, synchronicity WILL orchestrate on your behalf so your choices feel supported.

which is why i left my client that day with a pile of paint swatches and encouraged her to begin the conversation.

our homes are meant to be maps of who we are. where we are. and what we love.

by the end of that day, her husband was musing color options. and within the week, she had picked a starting point.

inspired to transform the dining room into a photography studio, the orange was soon gone. a new couch ordered. the perfect rug selected. and some color added to dial up the drama. as with most rooms, it is a work in progress with new ideas always on a simmer.

what makes me swoon most is my client’s delightful energy ushered in a creative rush. her own genius stepped out in a BIG way, and their home was quite happy to give her the spotlight.
