S/S: how did you get started in Feng Shui?

JN: Feng Shui came into my life when i was recovering from postpartum depression. i became highly aware of my personal energy and what was in alignment with myself – mind, body + spirit. my life had been going through big shifts since 2012, when i chose to leave a career in Human Resources. creating a home sanctuary was a high priority for me to further my life journey, heal, and raise a healthy, happy family.

interior design and personal development have both been major interests and passions of mine. Feng Shui combines both with an added emphasis on the spirit. it is a holistic and intuitive practice that i find incredibly empowering. it has been such a blessing, and i’m so grateful for the introduction to such an enriching and transformative practice.

my interior design consulting practice went through its own metamorphosis and once i became a certified practitioner, my design work focused more on energy flow, wellbeing, and manifestation – and less on the aesthetics of a space alone.

S/S: what inspires you creatively?

JN: currently, my 3 children inspire me creatively. from curating bedrooms for healthy sleep habits and expanding the feel in our quite small entrance to seamlessly head out the door all together to creating a dining room that is a foundation for positive and bonding conversations at our daily family dinner, there really is quite an endless list of places where creativity can be sourced at home. and on top of all this, each of us 5 have different personalities, likes and dislikes. it has been so much fun to design spaces that each of us will thrive within.

S/S: what is the biggest misconception people have about Feng Shui?

JN: i often refer to Feng Shui as practical magic. there is a big difference between acting with and without intention. when we set an intention, we are coming from a place of intuition and inner knowing. this “intuitive” intention is then the driver and fuel behind subsequent actions. ultimately, creating a space infused with the energy of the intention – being a constant reminder of where it is you want to go and aligning your personal energy with what you are manifesting.

the biggest misconception i see with Feng Shui is that it is spiritual non-sense. although there is an element of magic and woo, it is also a practice very much founded upon “practical” application. science has come a long way to support and further explain the benefits experienced when we are in an environment that is supportive mentally, physically, and spiritually.

S/S: if you could leave people with one FS action they can take today, what would it be?

JN: no matter where you are at, i would love for you to pick up an item that you own. it could be your cell phone, a book, or a throw pillow on the couch. whatever item you have, look at it, hold it, and observe it. how do you feel about it? does it bring up a particular memory? you don’t have to do anything with this item, but what you are doing is developing a sense of your space and how it relates to you. it is easy to forget about items in a space over time. by bringing your attention to one item at a time, you may be inspired to let go of some items or to possibly showcase others. this is one simple action that can cascade into many subsequent actions that dramatically shift the energy in your space, which is so representative of the experience of Feng Shui. the understanding that even small changes made in a space lead to huge changes in your life overall. xo
